| WHAT IS A HARD GROUND ETCHING?
For this technique, the metal plate is coated
with asphaltum which is dark brown. The artist
then takes a metal stylus and draws directly on
the plate, exposing the metal. The plate is then
etched in an acid bath. The plate is then cleaned
and the procedure repeated until the artist is
satisfied with the image. As the work
progresses, the artist may run "state" proofs to
gauge the work. "Rush Hour" went through five
states to achieve the final result.
